Mount Rigi Tour from Lucerne — Queen of the Mountains and 360-Degree Panorama
The Mount Rigi tour from Lucerne is a cornerstone of Swiss tourism. Dubbed the 'Queen of the Mountains' by Romantic poets in the 19th century, this 1,797-metre summit was the first mountain in Europe to be equipped with a cogwheel railway (1871). Victor Hugo, Mark Twain and Queen Victoria were among its illustrious visitors. The Mount Rigi excursion is also available from Zurich (departure at 08:30, direct 50-minute train to Lucerne).
Your day begins with a panoramic cruise on Lake Lucerne, one of the most beautiful Alpine lakes in Europe. For approximately one hour, the steamboat glides across deep blue waters flanked by sheer cliffs, verdant meadows and fishing villages that seem frozen in time. Each bend of the lake reveals a new perspective on the surrounding peaks. At Vitznau, you board the historic cogwheel railway: for thirty minutes, the red-and-white carriages climb the slopes of Mount Rigi through beech forests, flower-strewn Alpine pastures and dramatic rocky passages.
The Historic Rigi Cogwheel Railway
At the summit of Rigi Kulm, the world opens up before you in all its splendour. The 360-degree panorama is one of the most expansive in Switzerland: on a clear day, visibility stretches up to 200 kilometres, encompassing more than 50 Alpine peaks. Take time to explore the various signposted trails around the summit, visit the historic chapel and savour Swiss specialities (fondue, rösti, Älplermagronen) at the mountain-top restaurant. In summer, the Alpine meadows are blanketed in wildflowers and inhabited by marmots; in winter, a mantle of snow transforms Mount Rigi into a white paradise.
The descent follows the opposite slope via Arth-Goldau, offering a radically different perspective on the landscape — lakes, deep forests and rocky cliff faces. This circular route is one of the most comprehensive in Switzerland, combining three modes of transport (boat, cogwheel train, regional train) in a single day. The return to Lucerne or Zurich in the late afternoon brings this unforgettable excursion through the heart of historic Switzerland to a close.

What to see on Mount Rigi & the Lucerne Riviera
Mount Rigi, known as the 'Queen of the Mountains' since the 18th century, is an isolated massif between three lakes — Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz — offering a unique 360-degree panorama over the Alps, the Jura and the Swiss Plateau. Beyond the summit itself, this region is brimming with discoveries.
Rigi Kulm — Legendary Sunrises
Rigi Kulm (1,798 m), the highest point of the massif, is renowned above all for its spectacular sunrises. Since the 19th century, travellers from around the world have climbed the evening before and spent the night at the Rigi Kulm Hotel to witness the spectacle of dawn. When a sea of fog blankets the plateau, only the Alpine peaks and Mount Rigi emerge — creating the impression of floating on an ocean of clouds bathed in rose and gold. Mark Twain recounted this experience in 'A Tramp Abroad' (1880), and Queen Victoria lived it in 1868, carried to the summit in a sedan chair by four men.
The trail network on Mount Rigi is one of the finest in Switzerland. The Rigi Panoramaweg, a ridge trail of approximately three hours between Rigi Kulm and Rigi Scheidegg, offers uninterrupted views of the lakes and the Alps. The Mark Twain Trail, retracing the humorous route described by the author, passes through Alpine pastures, chapels and viewpoints. The Felsenweg, carved into the rock between Rigi Kaltbad and Rigi First, follows an impressive cliff face with plunging views over Lake Lucerne.
Panoramic Trails of Mount Rigi
Rigi Kaltbad, a thermal station halfway up the mountain, is a unique wellness destination. The Mineralbad & Spa complex, designed by Ticino architect Mario Botta in 2012, is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture integrated into the mountain. Its outdoor pools heated to 35°C offer panoramic views over the Alps and the lake. The cold spring of Kaltbad ('cold bath') has been known since the Middle Ages for its therapeutic properties.
Weggis, at the foot of Mount Rigi on the shores of Lake Lucerne, is the most charming starting point for the ascent. This village on the 'Lucerne Riviera' enjoys a mild microclimate thanks to its sheltered position — fig trees, palm trees and magnolias thrive here. The weekly Wednesday market offers Alpine cheese, homemade jams and mountain honey. The Belle Époque hotels along the lakeside promenade bear witness to the golden age of lake tourism.
Rigi Kaltbad — Alpine Spa and Thermal Baths
Vitznau, the neighbouring village, is home to the departure station of the oldest cogwheel railway in Europe (21 May 1871). The 30-minute ascent in the historic train, through flower-covered meadows and pine forests, is a unique railway experience. The Park Hotel Vitznau, housed in a fully renovated Belle Époque palace, is one of the finest hotels in Switzerland with its contemporary art collection and gourmet restaurant.
Goldau and its Natur- und Tierpark (nature and wildlife park) at the southern foot of Mount Rigi is an unmissable family destination. This 42-hectare park, created on the site of a catastrophic landslide in 1806, is home to European wild animals — bears, wolves, lynx, deer and marmots — in natural enclosures. The landslide trail recounts the geological history of this event which buried the village of Goldau under 30 million cubic metres of rock.
Weggis and Vitznau at the Foot of the Mountain
Lake Lauerz, an idyllic small lake between Mount Rigi and the Mythen peaks, is a haven of tranquillity. Its marshy shores harbour remarkable flora and fauna — beavers, herons, dragonflies and wild orchids. Schwanau Island, in the middle of the lake, preserves the ruins of a medieval castle and chapel.
On the gastronomic front, the Alpine restaurants on Mount Rigi serve mountain specialities: Älplermagronen (gratin macaroni with potatoes and apple compote), fondue made with Rigi Alpine cheese, and the celebrated Rigi-Chriesi (Rigi cherries) which feature in Zug's famous Kirsch liqueur.
